Therapy & Support FAQs

For those seeking therapy or support — some common questions answered.

Find a Therapist

Finding the right therapist is a personal process. We recommend starting by thinking about what you're hoping to address, and whether you have a preference for any particular type of therapy. Our Find a Therapist page gives an overview of practitioners and modalities available. If you're not sure, contact us and we'll help point you in the right direction.

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses the creative process of making art to explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, and foster self-awareness. You do not need any artistic ability or experience — the focus is on the process, not the product. It is particularly effective for those who find it difficult to express themselves through words alone.

While the terms are often used interchangeably, counselling typically refers to shorter-term, solution-focused support addressing specific issues or life events. Psychotherapy tends to involve a deeper, longer-term exploration of patterns, history, and the self. In practice, many practitioners are trained in both. What matters most is the quality of the therapeutic relationship.

Yes. Confidentiality is fundamental to the therapeutic relationship. Your therapist will discuss their confidentiality policy with you during your first session. There are very limited circumstances in which a therapist may need to break confidentiality — for example, if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others. These will be explained clearly before you begin.

This varies greatly depending on the individual and what they are bringing to therapy. Some people find significant benefit in as few as six sessions; others engage in longer-term work spanning months or years. Your therapist will discuss this with you and review it regularly throughout your work together.

Some of our practitioners offer online or telephone sessions in addition to in-person work. Please ask when enquiring and we will let you know which practitioners have this option available.

Yes. Several of our practitioners specialise in working with children and young people, including art therapy and play-based approaches. All practitioners working with children hold enhanced DBS clearance and are trained in safeguarding. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.

Professional Standards

Verify a Therapist's Credentials

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) maintains the register of regulated health and care professionals in the UK. Art Therapists, Practitioner Psychologists, and other regulated practitioners must be registered with the HCPC to practise legally.

You can verify any HCPC-registered practitioner's status — including Charlotte McRae (Reg: AS15748) — using the official HCPC register below.
